But it works now!

This network consists of a server and several production workstations -- one of which is ready to go down, reports a pilot fish on the scene.

"The support tech knew that workstation was heading for a crash," fish says. "And one day it did crash -- it couldn't connect to the network.

"After several reboots it was working. The tech stated that the switch needed rebooting, so that was the fix.

"I told him if the switch was down he would see errors on the other stations. He said there were none.

"I was expecting -- but never heard -- 'Why were there no errors after I power-cycled the switch?'

"I still wonder what the actual fix was."
